The Art of Connecting

How To Overcome Differences, Build Rapport and Communicate Effectively with Anyone

240 pages | AMACOM (May 12, 2006) | English | ISBN-10: 0814408729 | PDF
In this well-written, easily read book, the authors use the experience of several well-known, successful professionals as well as their own anecdotes to explore ways of connecting to people different than themselves. According to the authors, "There is always a bridge." The bridge is the missing link when someone is unable to communicate effectively with others. The authors stress that even though at first glance it may appear that the presenter has no points in common with a target audience and members of the audience may have nothing in common with one another, whether it is a group or an individual, if you look hard enough, you will find similarities that will help you reach your goal. These methods work whether you are dealing with conflict resolution, teaching someone from a different culture or background, or just trying to build a relationship.

One of the most important points the book raises is that it is necessary to come to each interaction with an open mind. People should not assume that one individual is just like another because they both have the same background. It is necessary to observe an individual's dress, manner, mode of speaking, and other actions to identify a way to reach him or her.

Although this book is best suited for people who work or live in an area with diverse cultural or socioeconomic groups, everyone could benefit from it. All areas of society have conflict resolution issues that can be resolved or at least mitigated using the techniques that the authors explore.
