Jossey-Bass | 352 pages | PDF | 6,7 MB

A comprehensive reading guide that goes beyond the standard phonics method.

According to the author, a remarkable 40% of children have difficulty learning to read. The main problem, says Blank, is that most methods only cover one or two of the six essential reading skills, which make up her Phonics Plus Five system—rest assured, however, this is no flash-in-the-pan quick fix, Blank has over 40 years of experience in child psychology. After discussing the causes of the failures, she outlines the six skills of reading—sequencing (letter order), writing (letter creation), phonology (sounds), semantics (meanings), syntax (grammar) and text (books)—and offers in-depth treatment for each one. She maintains an even, simple tone throughout, encouraging readers to see the process through a child’s eye—with countless fun activities, word lists, sample content and pictures.

An invaluable resource for all child educators. --2005 Kirkus Reviews

Center for Science in the Public Interest 259pages | PDF | 36.5MB
Scientific studies maintain that eating more plant foods and less animal products can lead to years of better health: a diet which also results in less pollution and impact on the environment, too. For those who would still argue the facts, SIX ARGUMENTS draws more direct links between dietary choices and environmental and health issues, with chapters providing step-by-step proofs on how meat-loaded diets lead to ill health and environmental degradation. While the theme isn't new, it's the reasoned and exact, science-based point-by-point six arguments which are clearer than more general surveys of the issues involved.

An interesting little cookbook, although I'm not sure how I'd rate it. The concept (writers' recipes) is no longer unique, but every recipe--no matter how familiar--always seems a bit different.

You'll find goodies in here like Bill’s Day After Thanksgiving, Shop ’Til You Drop Scrambled Eggs; Canadian Lobster Stew with a Hint of California; Irish Stew with Lamb and Guiness; Orange Blossom Cheesecake; Texas-Style Stuffed Jalapenos.
