More Than Genes: What Science Can Tell Us About Toxic Chemicals, Development, and the Risk to Our Children

We are all shaped by our genetic inheritance and by the environment we live in. Indeed, the argument about which of these two forces, nature or nurture, redominates has been raging for decades. But what about our very first environment--the prenatal world where we exist for nine months between conception and birth and where we are more vulnerable than at any other point in our lives? In More Than Genes, Dan Agin marshals new scientific evidence to argue that the fetal environment can be just as crucial as genetic hard-wiring or even later environment in determining our intelligence and behavior. Stress during pregnancy, for example, puts women at far greater risk of bearing children prone to anxiety disorders. Nutritional deprivation during early fetal development may elevate the risk of late onset schizophrenia. And exposure to a whole host of environmental toxins--methylmercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, pesticides, ionizing radiation, and most especially lead--as well as maternal use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, or cocaine can have impacts ranging from mild cognitive impairment to ADHD, autism, schizophrenia, and other mental disorders. Agin argues as well that differences in IQ among racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups are far more attributable to higher levels of stress and chemical toxicity in inner cities--which seep into the prenatal environment and compromise the health of the fetus--than to genetic inheritance. The good news is that the prenatal environment is malleable, and Agin suggests that if we can abandon the naive idea of "immaculate gestation," we can begin to protect fetal development properly.

Cogently argued, thoroughly researched, and accessibly written, More Than Genes challenges many long-held assumptions and represents a huge step forward in our understanding of the origins of human intelligence and behavior.

My Description & Views About The Book In this book, Desmond Morris looks at human intimacy which he clearly and simply defines as body contact, literally speaking also he adds. He shows the roots of intimacy, the stages of meeting someone until we both get naked and into sexual intimacy with each other (the 12 steps!).

He also shows the importance of intimacy and how far we humans will go in order to get this need (intimacy) satisfied. Sometimes we construct substitutes for intimacy like taking care of pets and sometimes we use objects and/or ourselves to satisfy this need. Finally, he points out why we are "not in touch" with each other in today's overcrowded society...

I think this is an amazing book that will give you a strong reason why you want to get more body contact with your fellow human beings. And no, it must not be sexual intimacy with everyone, it can be as simple as a hug when you meet a friend or your family. I hug my family members every time I see them since I read this book, because it is a win-win situation!

Body Language for Competent Teachers By Sean Neill & Chris Caswell

Posted Image

Description
Clearly illustrated, this book aims to show new teachers how to use gesture, posture, facial expression and tone of voice effectively to establish a good relationship with the classes that they teach.

From the Back Cover
Non-verbal skills are invaluable for teachers in getting their own messages across to classes and understanding the messages pupils are sending them.

Here an educational psychologist and a classroom teacher join forces to show new teachers in particular how to use gesture, posture, facial expression and tone of voice effectively to establish a good relationship with the classes that they teach. Each chapter is illustrated with clear drawings of pupils and teachers in common classroom situations and accompanied by training exercises aimed at improving the new teacher's ability to observe both her class and her own practice.

A section at the end of the book gives suggested solutions to some of the exercises and the final chapter, addressed to staff responsible for their colleagues' professional development, provides suggestions for half and whole day courses.
