Body Image: Understanding Body Dissatisfaction in Men, Women and Children

Image

264 pages | Publisher: Routledge (August 29, 2007) | English | ISBN-10: 0415358213 | PDF
Sarah Grogan provides a comprehensive overview of the subject of body image, pulling together diverse research from the fields of psychology, sociology, media, and gender studies in men, women, and children.

This second edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the significant increase in research on body image since the first edition was published, including new empirical data collected specifically for this text. In addition to examining evidence for sociocultural influences on body image, the book also reviews recent literature and includes new findings on body modification practices (cosmetic surgery, piercing, tattooing, and bodybuilding). It takes a critical look at interventions designed to promote positive body image and also attempts to link body image to physical health, looking in particular at motivations for potentially health-damaging practices such as anabolic steroid use and cosmetic surgery.

The only text to date that examines the issue of body image, focusing on men and children as well as women, Body Image will be invaluable to students and researchers in the area as well as those with an interest in how to promote positive body image.

Review
"Grogan has provided a thorough and comprehensive revision that belongs on the bookshelf of any clinician, researcher, or student interested in the fascinating field of body image. Interest in the topic of body image has expanded dramatically in the last decade, and each of the new and emerging areas are included in this book, including men's body image, cross-cultural perspectives, and avenues for enhancing body satisfaction. This book provides a roadmap for future research." - J. Kevin Thompson, Department of Psychology, University of South Florida, USA

"In her revised volume, Professor Grogan leaves no stone unturned in telling the scientific and cultural stories of human embodiment. She is scrupulous in her psychological scholarship and articulate in her prose. Readers will be both fascinated and edified by this book’s thoughtful coverage of a subject that so deeply affects our lives." - Thomas F. Cash, Department of Psychology, Old Dominion University and Editor-in-Chief of Body Image: An International Journal of Research

"Sarah Grogan has offered a fine overview of contemporary knowledge in the field of body image. She summarizes, makes sense of, and organizes a vast array of research into one thoughtful, but very readable and easily digested volume, while at the same time capturing the vitality and excitement of research in body image." - Professor Marika Tiggemann, School of Psychology, Flinders University, Australia

Sugar Blues: The Dangers of Sugar Reveals

Image

Chilton Book Company | ISBN: 0446343129 | English | PDF | 256 pages | 20 Mb
The classic, bestselling expose+a7 on the dangers of sugar reveals how this commonly ingested ingredient in countless foods is highly addictive and causes a host of medical problems from depression to coronary thrombosis. Reissue. PW.

I'm sugar-free ever since reading "Sugar Blues." I was sluggish, moody, hungry, etc. I remembered that John Lennon mentioned Dufty's book in an interview once. So I bought it at the local health food store. He starts off with his own sugar hell and redemption and then delves into the whole history of the cane. Very interesting, healthwise and also politically. This is the meat of the book. (The Boston "Tea" Party? More like the rum party.) I like his writing style; he keeps it homespun. (Why did some think this book needs more "hard science"? Isn't it already in there? It's not intended to be in a medical journal [which can't always be trusted!].) When I tell people I'm sugar-free they usually scoff, saying sugar's not that bad for you, why give it up completely. Well, now I wake up clear and I get through the afternoon w/o any flagging of energy. At various times of the day I'll feel some energy racing through my body. (A great feeling; keeps me motivated.) Now I need less food on my plate, and my hypoglycemia has all but disappeared. (Think about THAT one, folks.) Never eat "refined sucrose" again! It can be done! Sky's the limit! Thank you, William Dufty!

Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It

Image

Audio MP3 | Publisher: Random House Audio (December 28, 2010) | English | ISBN-10: 0307877523 | 108 MB
An eye-opening, myth-shattering examination of what makes us fat, from acclaimed science writer Gary Taubes.

In his New York Times best seller, Good Calories, Bad Calories, Taubes argued that our diet’s overemphasis on certain kinds of carbohydrates—not fats and not simply excess calories—has led directly to the obesity epidemic we face today. The result of thorough research, keen insight, and unassailable common sense, Good Calories, Bad Calories immediately stirred controversy and acclaim among academics, journalists, and writers alike. Michael Pollan heralded it as “a vitally important book, destined to change the way we think about food.”

Building upon this critical work in Good Calories, Bad Calories and presenting fresh evidence for his claim, Taubes now revisits the urgent question of what’s making us fat—and how we can change—in this exciting new book. Persuasive, straightforward, and practical, Why We Get Fat makes Taubes’s crucial argument newly accessible to a wider audience.

Taubes reveals the bad nutritional science of the last century, none more damaging or misguided than the “calories-in, calories-out” model of why we get fat, and the good science that has been ignored, especially regarding insulin’s regulation of our fat tissue. He also answers the most persistent questions: Why are some people thin and others fat? What roles do exercise and genetics play in our weight? What foods should we eat, and what foods should we avoid?

Packed with essential information and concluding with an easy-to-follow diet, Why We Get Fat is an invaluable key in our understanding of an international epidemic and a guide to what each of us can do about it.

77 Ways to Beat Colds and Flu: A People's Medical Society Book

Image

94 pages | Publisher: Bantam | English | ISBN-10: 0553574205 | 5 MB
With sections on understanding colds and flu, tips on prevention and treating, and a look at remedies in the research stage, this handy guide provides all the consumer needs to know to combat these common but annoying ailments.

Poised for release in the middle of the annual flu season, this People's Medical Society book unites sound medical advice and the latest information on the efficacy of home and folk remedies for colds and flu. Among other issues, Inlander and Moran explore vitamin C's effects on colds by interviewing Dr. Linus Pauling, the leading advocate of vitamin C, and restating his surprising views in lay terms. Although some of the advice may seem obvious (e.g., cut alcohol and drug consumption), much is less so (e.g., "Don't fly unless necessary when you have a cold or flu"). Especially valuable is the categorical treatment of such matters as exactly which symptoms constitute a cold and which the flu, and what foods are beneficial in battling colds and flu. This slim, handy reference contains the skinny on cold and flu avoidance and treatment, not to mention a chapter on promising research and a brief but useful glossary, too.

The Gabriel Method: The Revolutionary DIET-FREE Way to Totally Transform Your Body

Image

Atria Books | 224 pages | English | 2008 | ISBN: 1582702187 | PDF
The pile of recent dieting books is growing faster than the average American's waistline. From the well-known programs that deprive and restrict to ones that rely on juice alone, it seems that everybody has an answer to the growing problem of obesity.

When Jon Gabriel's life took an unexpected turn, he suddenly was awakened to the marvelous gift that he had been given -- the opportunity to live -- and was disgusted at how he had treated his body. At over four hundred pounds, walking, sleeping, and working was a struggle against gravity, and his life was a constant battle between emotional and physical satiation. He was slowly killing himself with food.

Like the estimated 58 percent of Americans, and rising numbers in other countries, Jon was trapped in what he came to call the FAT - Famine and Temperature - trap. By studying biochemistry, Gabriel learned that your body has an internal logic that determines how fat or thin you will be at any given time. The way to lose weight is not to struggle or to force yourself to lose weight but to understand this internal logic and work with it so that your body wants to be thinner. When your body wants to be thinner, weight loss is inevitable and becomes automatic and effortless. You simply crave less food, you crave healthier foods, your metabolism speeds up and you become very efficient at burning fat, just like a naturally thin person. And that's the real transformation -- to transform yourself into a naturally thin person, so that you can eat whatever you want whenever you want and still be thin, fit, and vibrantly healthy.

After reading The Gabriel Method, you will learn:

# Your body has a reason why it's holding on to weight--and it's not your fault.
# Fat is a cushion--a protective barrier that our mind believes is helping to protect us.
# If you can change that belief, you can change your body; Stop the cycle of crash dieting and start eating what you want, when you want it.
# How to choose healthy, nutritious foods that nourish the cells in your body, not starve them.
# Delicious shakes and smoothies, and super-power supplements, that can jump start your success.
# The simple way you can train your mind and body to work with your goal of health, not against it.
# Eliminate the emotional and mental reasons your body holds on to weight in just 10 minutes a day.

It certainly worked for Jon; he lost 225 pounds in two-and-a-half years, going from 409 pounds to 184, without suffering, dieting, or anguishing over his body. Unlike most people who lose an extensive amount of weight, his skin tightened up and now is indistinguishable from that of a person who has been healthy his whole life.
